The Science of Complexity

Complexity

What is The Science of Complexity?

The Science of Complexity is the study of systems with many parts and how they interact to create emergent phenomena. Researchers use scientific methods to analyze the dynamics of complex systems in the social sciences, the economy, and the environment. They identify key intervention points to generate multiplier effects and scale positive change.

What I do,

  • I collaborate across disciplines to study problems at multiple scales

  • I discover new ways of working in organizations

  • I use scientific methods to analyze complex systems

  • I study how parts of a system interact to create emergent phenomena

  • I use mathematical modeling, simulation, and quantitative measurement

Importance of the Complexity Scientist:

  • Complexity Scientists can see inefficiency and dysfunction in Systems and Processes that are not visible to others.

  • They know the steps necessary to optimize a system and its intervention points and break limits.

  • They produce positive results of

Efficiency, Functionality, Performance and Profitability

That gives our government and businesses an advantage over our foreign competitors and adversaries.

Why I do it,

  • My work helps us understand systems that are difficult to understand using traditional scientific methods

  • It helps us understand how systems can self-organize and exhibit complex behaviors that can be predicted

  • It helps us understand how systems can evolve over time in both desirable and undesirable directions.

  • It helps us understand how systems can adapt to changing demands or be positively transformed for society.
