About me
In 2015, while completing my master’s thesis in City and Regional Planning at Morgan State University—focused on sustainable urban infrastructure—I gained compelling evidence of structural oversights within infrastructure and governance systems that pose long-term risks to economic stability, environmental resilience, national competitiveness, and energy security.

These challenges are not unique to the United States. Many nations whose economic strength supports their military and geopolitical influence face similar systemic vulnerabilities. As global competition intensifies, the question becomes increasingly important: which societies will successfully adapt their systems to meet the demands of the future?
Throughout history, societies have relied on individuals capable of interpreting complex signals and anticipating risks before they fully emerge. The biblical story of Jacob and Joseph—who interpreted Pharaoh’s dreams and helped Egypt prepare for years of famine—is a powerful example of planning and strategic foresight applied to governance.

Inspired by this tradition of foresight, I developed an analytical approach to identify fulcrums and inflection points in three (3) complex systems. Through my work, I aim to alert institutions and decision-makers to emerging structural risks and provide recommendations for improved economic, social, and environmental outcomes.

My goal is to promote effective systems of governance and infrastructure, and ensure participation opportunities are accessible to everyone. I am Joseph D'Millio, also known as Faro, a complexity scientist, architect, and planner dedicated to identifying and solving complex systemic challenges that impact the performance of organizations, governments, businesses, and the people who depend on them.
